Following the 2026 Paris municipal elections, who will be the new mayor of the 20th arrondissement? Find out the results!

The municipal elections took place in Paris on March 15 and 22, 2026, against a backdrop of a significant overhaul of the electoral system in the capital. This reform introduced a new voting process, changing the way local and municipal representatives are elected by the residents of Paris.

How Did the 2026 Municipal Elections Unfold in Paris?

As part of this reform, each voter was asked to cast two separate ballots within the same polling station. The first was to elect district councilors, who then select from among themselves the mayor of their district. The second vote was for the Paris councilors, members of the City Council who participate in electing the mayor of Paris.

The election was conducted using a proportional multi-list system with gender parity, with a majority bonus awarded to the winning list, both for the municipal council and the district councils. This setup aims to strengthen democratic representation at both the district level and citywide.

In the 20th arrondissement, voters were invited to choose among lists offering teams for both serving on the district council and representing the neighborhood on the Paris City Council. This dual voting process shifts the campaigning approach, emphasizing projects that are both local and city-wide.

The 20th District: A Diverse and Vibrant Neighborhood

The 20th arrondissement of Paris is located on the eastern side of the city and is one of the most vibrant and diverse neighborhoods. It borders the 11th, 12th, and 19th districts, as well as the neighboring town of Montreuil. Historically, this area was made up of villages and farmland before being integrated into Paris in the 19th century, and remnants of this heritage can still be seen today in its quiet, winding streets.

The neighborhood of Belleville, shared with the 19th arrondissement, is particularly iconic: vibrant, diverse, and creative. It embodies the cultural melting pot that characterizes the 20th district. For many years, it has been home to working-class and immigrant communities, shaping its unique social and cultural identity.

District 20 is also renowned for its iconic landmarks and relaxing green spaces, such as the Père Lachaise Cemetery and the Belleville Park, which offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Paris. Known for its vibrant street art, intimate performance venues, and cozy neighborhood cafés, this district is less touristy than the city center but charmed by its authentic vibe and village-like atmosphere.
