Since 2022, the municipality of Noisy-Le-Grand in Seine-Saint-Denis has been trying to revive its abandoned metro, and by the end of 2027 it will finally be done! The municipality launched a call for projects to rehabilitate the SK metro, a ghost station that had never been used. After a few setbacks, a third-location center will see the light of day in less than three years' time, if the work goes according to plan.
For the record, the SK metro was inaugurated in 1993. Carrying the initials of the names of its builder (Soulé) and inventor (Yann de Kermadec), the metro was just 518 metres long. At the time, it was intended to link the RER A station to the Mailles Horizon business district. But the developer went bankrupt.
As a result, this metro, whose entrance is located beneath the esplanade de la Commune de Paris, has never opened to the public. The tunnel, its two stations and its " cable car-like " cabins have thus been abandoned over time, to the delight of urbex (urban exploration) and graffiti enthusiasts. Since then, the spot has been the subject of official visits, which will stop at the end of October 2025, when work will finally begin on the site. There's not long left to enjoy it!
Last days to visit Station K, Noisy-le-Grand's abandoned metro station, before the work begins
Beneath the ground in Noisy-le-Grand lies an abandoned metro station, Station K, which was supposed to be futuristic when it was created in 1991. It never saw the light of day, but will soon be renovated into a lively third place. You can visit it until November 2, 2025, before work begins. [Read more]
Originally, the 2,500m2 space was due to open in 2025, but the winner of the call for projects at the time never came through. Supported by Le Centquatre, Station K already has a few candidates in mind to bring the space to life, but will be launching a new call for projects by the end of this year to make this dream a reality one day, with the aim of a more concrete future by January 2026, tells us Téo Garcia, operations manager at Socaren.
Although a climbing wall was included in the program, this will not be the case, given the size and height of the site, there would not have been enough lanes to make the venue attractive. The programming will therefore be less focused on sport, and more on culture and events, to make it a friendly, trendy third-place with a strong identity and programming accessible to all, young people and families alike.
The cathedral space, which is due to go underground at the end of 2027, could serve as a nightclub, concert hall or nightclub, as well as a unique troglodyte bar in the depths, a virtual reality space linked to the underground spirit or an escape game, all of which could transform the place depending on the time of day. What is certain is that the SK cabins will remain in place, diverted for other uses, in order to preserve a space that bears witness to the history of the place, just like some of the graffiti preserved on the tracks.
A future "tiers-lieu" that's sure to please! All we can do now is hope that work progresses smoothly!
