Since March 3, 2025, special lanes have been reserved for carpooling on the Paris ring road. Symbolized by a blue sign with a white diamond, these lanes - located on the left-hand side of the ring road - are dedicated to vehicles carrying at least two passengers, as well as to public transport, emergency vehicles, cabs and vehicles for people with reduced mobility.
These lanes are reserved for carpooling on weekdays, Monday to Friday, from 7am to 10:30am and from 4pm to 8pm. The lane is open to all on weekends and public holidays. To avoid repercussions, these times must be respected: a fine of 135 euros will be imposed on motorists who drive alone on these roads.
To ensure compliance with these new rules, a control system has been in operation since May 2, 2025. A computer-assisted video enforcement (VAO ) system monitors vehicles on these lanes. More concretely, cameras equipped with a recognition system can count the number of people in a filmed vehicle, and spot those in breach of the law. An agent then verifies the information, and fines offenders with a fine of 135 euros, explains the public service website.
These new lanes take the place of the Olympic and Paralympic lanes, implemented during the 2024 Games. This measure is also part of the municipality's ecological project, which aims to encourage greener practices, while reducing the number of road users, and therefore CO2 emissions and traffic jams.
