Ah, the sweet thrill of pedaling around Paris and the Ile-de-France region, hair in the wind and thighs of steel... Until the fateful moment when you have to take the metro or RER with your bike. So, is it allowed? Not always... Here are the rules you need to know to avoid getting stuck at an automatic door.
In the Paris metro, the answer is no. No bikes allowed. And the same goes for buses , streetcars and the Montmartre funicular. The reason? Saturation: no space, no bike.
Conversely, on the RER, your trusty two-wheeled steed is welcome... under certain conditions! You can travel with your bike on lines A, B, C, D and E, at the following times:
Please note that you must :
On the other hand, if you're the proud owner of a folding bike (and a well-folded one at that!), you can carry it every day, at any time, as long as you don't disturb other passengers.
Another exception for Sunday sports enthusiasts: on Métro 1, your classic bike is tolerated on Sundays and public holidays before 4.30pm.
As a reminder, it is forbidden to use rollerblades, scooters, skates or other bicycles inside stations and vehicles. You're not allowed to glide. In the event of an accident, you alone are responsible.
In short, classic bike + RER, yes, but only at specific times. Classic bike + metro? Still no, except on line 1 on Sundays and public holidays before 4.30pm. Folding bike? Green light any day, any time, as long as you're not in the way. What about freestyle scooters or skateboards in the corridors? Definitely not!
