The Ile de la Cité in Paris was plunged into darkness this Monday morning, directly affecting judicial activity. The power cut has led to the partial closure of the Palais de Justice and the Tribunal de Commerce until at least 2pm. The course of hearings has been disrupted - we take stock.
As early as 9 a.m., lawyers reported the interruption of electricity on social networks, mentioning the closure of access to the Palais de Justice and the Tribunal de Commerce. Only the hearings of the Investigating Chamber and the Criminal Court were maintained. Other hearings, notably those concerning emergency hospitalization and foreign nationals, were redirected to the Paris industrial tribunal.
Among the hearings disrupted was the trial of Michaël Chiolo, a jihadist on trial for a knife attack on prison guards at Condé-sur-Sarthe. Although the fourth week of hearings was due to start on Monday, the session has been suspended. No details have yet been released as to whether it will resume later today.
The exact reasons for this power failure in Paris remain unknown, but the event comes just a few days after another blackout caused havoc at the Gare de l'Est. Last December, a similar blackout affected several Parisian districts, raising questions about the reliability of the power supply in the capital.
The situation on the Ile de la Cité is expected to return to normal in the afternoon. However, this new paralysis rekindles the debate on energy security for strategic sites in Paris.
