They are two of the six major stations in Paris, with a combined daily passenger flow of 800,000! Just 500 metres apart, Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est are used daily by a huge number of public transport users. Many pass from one to the other to take the metro, RER or Transilien. Every day, Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) counts 200,000 connections between the Paris Nord (Gare du Nord - Magenta - La Chapelle) and Paris Est (Gare de l'Est - Château-Landon) hubs.
However, there is currently no underground connection between these two stations. At present, to reach the Gare de l'Est from the Gare du Nord, and vice versa, users have to leave the station and take the Rue d'Alsace and Rue de Dunkerque, in the 10th arrondissement. But soon, the daily life of these users is set to change. In a post published on its social networks on July 30, 2025, Île-de-France Mobilités confirmed the progress of work on the forthcoming opening of an underground link between Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est.
" Less stress, more simplicity: the connection between Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est is moving forward ", it reads. However, we'll have to wait and see. After all, this underground link won't see the light of day until 2027. In future, it should facilitate journeys between the two stations, with " smoother connections ", " enhanced comfort " and " time savings ", says IDFM. The underpass will be located between Magenta station (RER E) and the new passenger concourse at Gare de l'Est, at Rue d'Alsace 50.
In the meantime, work has also been undertaken on the surface. The roadway has been redesigned " to enable a pedestrian link in less than 6 minutes ". A new escalator between rue d'Alsace basse and rue d'Alsace haute has also been installed.
