A new-generation metro, Europe's first urban cable car, reinforced buses and the end of the cardboard ticket: back-to-school 2025 transforms Île-de-France's transport system. From September to December, Île-de-France Mobilités is rolling out major innovations for the region's 12 million users.

Transportation in Île-de-France is undergoing a revolution this September 2025. Between technological innovations and network modernization, Île-de-France Mobilités is announcing major changes that will transform the daily lives of Ile-de-France passengers from September to December. We take a month-by-month look at these changes, which promise to significantly improve transport services in the Paris region and its suburbs.

What are the two major new features announced for 2025?

Île-de-France Mobilités focuses on two flagship projects. In the autumn, the new-generation MF19 metro will make its debut on line 10. This new metro is designed to be reliable, quiet and, above all, air-conditioned - a first that will change the game for Parisian commuters.

In December, it's time for Câble C1, Île-de-France's first cable car, which will link Créteil Pointe du Lac (terminus of line 8) to Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. A record-breaker: this future aerial tramway will be the longest in Europe in an urban area. With 11,000 passengers expected daily, it will run at an impressive rate, with a gondola every 23 seconds.

What changes will September bring to the Ile-de-France transport network?

  • 52 bus routes reinforced throughout the Île-de-France region, particularly in the outer suburbs, Marne-la-Vallée and the Saclay plateau

  • New bus route 4627 (September 15) between Paris-Saclay and Les Ulis via Orsay, to facilitate access to the Paris-Saclay hospital and link the École Polytechnique to the Les Ulis shopping center.

  • Reinforcement of RER A with long trains on Thursday evenings from 10pm, in addition to Friday and Saturday evenings.

  • Extension of Navigo Liberté+ to Orly airport via Orlyval

October: first tests of the new cable car and tramways

  • Arrival of the last new tramway trainset on T1 (TW20) to permanently replace the old 1992 streetcars.

  • First trials of Cable C1, with all cabs tested under real conditions: frequency, timetables, take-offs, stops, with ballast equivalent to passenger weight.

November: farewell to the cardboard ticket and changes in operators

  • End of cardboard ticket sales at ticket vending machines and stop accepting them on buses and streetcars

  • Installation of new-generation passenger information terminals at Paris bus stops

  • Keolis (SNCF subsidiary) takes over operation of 37 bus routes, 2 express bus routes and 3 transport-on-demand services in the Marne et Brie area (Chelles, Pontault-Combault, Emerainville).

  • RATP CAP Île-de-France starts operating bus routes in the Boucles Nord de Seine (Asnières-sur-Seine, Levallois-Perret, Neuilly-sur-Seine) and Bords de Marne (Bry-sur-Marne, Noisy-le-Grand, Vincennes, Montreuil) areas.

December: New-generation RER and revolutionary TZEN 4

  • Full RER D service to Vert-de-Maisons, Créteil-Pompadour and Maisons-Alfort stations, in anticipation of the arrival of line 15 of the Grand Paris Express.

  • Entry into service of the new-generation RER on the Villeneuve-Saint-Georges - Melun branch of RER D

  • Start of TZEN 4 trials between Viry-Châtillon and Corbeil: a 24-meter bi-articulated bus that recharges directly from the ground in stations (a world first).

  • Start of assembly of the new Véligo models to be deployed in January 2026 as part of the overhaul of the electric bike rental service.

Véligo continues to expand, promoting soft mobility

The Véligo service continues to win over Parisians, with over 400,000 requests for assistance in purchasing bikes since 2020, for a total of €150 million paid out. The fleet currently comprises 20,000 electrically-assisted bicycles and 1,000 cargo bikes, available for long-term rental from €40 a month (€20 at the reduced rate).

  • A further 25,000 bikes will join the fleet by the end of 2025, bringing the total to 45,000 vehicles.

  • New Véligo models being assembled for deployment in January 2026

  • 120,000 users already use this service, described as "the world's largest long-term rental service for VAEs".

  • Purchase subsidies maintained: up to €400 for electric bikes, €600 for electric cargo bikes, and even €100 for mechanical bikes for 15-25 year-olds via the LABAZ app.

At the end of 2025, transport in the Paris region will undergo a profound transformation. With technological innovations, modernized equipment and improved service, we are witnessing a real transformation of the network, designed to improve the daily lives of millions of users. These new features are part of an overall modernization program that places the Paris Region at the forefront of innovation in public transport.
