Every year in November, smokers who want to quit smoking are invited to take on a collective challenge: No Tobacco Month. For 30 days, not a single cigarette. The initiative gives soon-to-be former smokers the chance to take on the challenge with support from a community working toward the same goals, and to benefit from advice from former smokers. To help you find the motivation you need to see the challenge through—and much more—here are a few reasons to quit smoking:
Just because you started smoking doesn’t mean you’re doomed. Quitting smoking can reduce your risk of developing certain conditions associated with cigarettes. One year after your last cigarette, your risk of a heart attack is cut in half, and your risk of a stroke is similar to that of a nonsmoker. The risk of lung cancer also decreases, and the sooner you quit, the better. According to the Ameli website: “At age 75, the cumulative risk of dying from lung cancer is 16% for those who continue to smoke, 6% for those who quit at age 50, and just 2% for those who quit at age 30.”
It’s not too late to quit smoking. Quitting at 40 could increase our life expectancy by seven years. At 50, it increases by four years, and at 60, by three years.
For both men and women, quitting smoking can also improve fertility—a key fact if you want to have children. But that’s not all: quitting smoking can also improve sexual performance in men who suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Cigarettes also have harmful effects on our appearance: yellowing teeth, premature skin aging, brittle nails—all potential sources of self-consciousness that could be eased by quitting smoking. That’s right: when you quit smoking, you gradually look healthier. Your complexion brightens, you get fewer spots, your wrinkles become less pronounced, your teeth get whiter, your nails become less yellow and stronger—and, as a significant bonus, your breath smells better!
It’s no secret: smoking regularly is expensive! In France, a pack of cigarettes costs an average of 11 to 14 euros in 2026. At a pack a day, that works out to around 360 euros a month! In these times of inflation, quitting smoking therefore seems like a smart financial choice.
And what are/were your reasons for quitting smoking?
