A mural on a building's facade, a statue honoring a historical figure, or a striking installation by a renowned contemporary artist... In Paris, opportunities to stumble upon something unexpected and inspiring are countless. A case in point: an unusual gateway installed on the Place du Louvre since January 15, 2026. On that day, the question “Is this something new?” can be heard near the Square Michel-Caldaguès. While some passersby, glued to their phones, pay little attention, many stop to ponder its meaning. Others eagerly snap photos or record footage of this intriguing installation.
On closer inspection, you'll notice an imposing gate featuring various geometric shapes—round, oval, and cylindrical. Three additional sculptures surround it. So, what is it all about? Titled "Mirror Gate II", this art piece was created by Argentine-born artist Pilar Zeta. Her work blends philosophy, geometry, symbolism, mysticism, and postmodern architecture. Pilar Zeta is also renowned for her collaborations with musical artists, including the British band Coldplay and American singer Camila Cabello.
In 2023, Pilar Zeta unveiled "Mirror Gate" at the foot of the stunning Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. This piece evokes themes of ancient history and infinity. Three years later, the monumental installation has made its way to France, arriving in Paris. The large-scale artwork now graces the square outside the Louvre, specifically in front of the Egyptian collection, aligned perfectly with I. M. Pei’s iconic glass pyramid. "The stories and mysteries of Egypt have always been at the heart of my work. As an independent artist, it almost feels surreal—almost mystical—to see how everything is coming together right now," explains Pilar Zeta on Instagram.
Through this symbolic gateway, presented as an evolution of the original installation unveiled at the Pyramids of Giza, Pilar Zeta aims to foster a dialogue not only between ancient Egypt and contemporary art but also between the cities of Cairo and Paris.
For the record, the artwork "Mirror Gate II" was crafted from ancient Egyptian heritage stones, including yellow alabaster, red granite from Aswan, and Breccia Fawakhir. These materials are "used for thousands of years in Egyptian architecture and sculpture," explains the artist. For those interested, this monumental sculpture "Mirror Gate II" is on display at Place du Louvre, near the Michel-Caldaguès square, and will remain there until February 15, 2026.
To extend the journey into contemporary Egypt, the Carrousel du Louvre is also hosting the exhibition "Egypt: A Dual Perspective" until February 15. This presents a unique opportunity to explore 22 striking photographs by Mahmoud Hawary and Mohamed Kamal. Their images vividly depict everyday life in modern Egypt while highlighting the country's rich cultural roots.
