Paris: Truckers protest over fuel, ring road targeted

Truck drivers and coach operators in Île-de-France are staging an “operation escargot” on the Paris ring road this Monday, March 30, 2026, to protest rising fuel prices and government subsidies they deem insufficient. Here’s everything you need to know.

Significant disruptions are forecast on the Paris ring road this Monday morning. About 110 buses and 70 trucks are taking part in a snail‑protest operation between 10h and 11h, according to an AFP union source. The demonstrators gathered between 9h and 10h near the Porte de Vincennes, before moving onto the ring road. If you plan to drive in Île-de-France this morning, expect heavy slowdowns and consider an alternate route.

Why are truck drivers taking to the streets?

The mobilization of the road hauliers and the coach operators comes in a context of surging fuel prices since the start of the Middle East conflict. For weeks now, road professionals have been sounding the alarm: filling a tank can now cost more than the service charged to the customer. In a sense of urgency, the government announced on Friday aid of around 50 million euros for the transport sector, targeting micro-enterprises and SMEs that can demonstrate severe cash-flow difficulties linked to the crisis, equivalent to a flat-rate aid of 20 cents per liter for the affected companies.

Aid Measures Deemed Insufficient by Unions

But this boost fails to win over industry professionals. OTRE (European Organization of Road Transport Operators) said in a statement released on Saturday that the announcements were “not up to par,” hoping the initial funds released would be “only a first step.” The union is calling for bolder measures, comparable to those secured during the 2022 Ukraine crisis.

On the government side, Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot signaled on CNews that aid to businesses could be extended “perhaps if the situation persists into May and June,” while stressing that the current budget outlook doesn’t allow the measures rolled out during the war in Ukraine to be simply replicated.

Short-time work and the VAT debate

The Minister of Labour, Jean-Pierre Farandou, for his part announced on franceinfo that he is "ready to implement" measures of partial unemployment to relieve companies facing a drop in activity directly linked to the crisis, across all sectors.

Politically, the debate also spilled into the National Assembly. The RN deputy for Loiret, Thomas Ménagé, argued on the program “Questions politiques” for a cut in VAT on fuels, from 20% to 5.5%, and a reduction in VAT on energy, saying it was “the only fair measure.” The group estimates the proposal would amount to about 1 billion euros per month, or 12 billion over the year.

As unions and the state inch toward a possible agreement, protests are expected to continue in the coming days in other French regions. To monitor disruptions in real time, you can check Bison Futé or the site of the Paris Police Prefecture.
