After the national contests for the best millefeuille, the best pain au chocolat, the best croissant au beurre, and the best pain de campagne, comes the concours du meilleur flan de France!
On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the National Confederation of French Bakery and Patisserie staged the very first edition of an event that puts the spotlight on a pâtisserie emblématique beloved by sweet-tooths: the flan. For the occasion, 18 master bakers-pastry chefs from across France competed, including two artisans from the Île-de-France region.
For four hours, the 18 contestants in the competition had to bake two pâtissier custard tarts with a diameter of 24 cm and a height ranging from 3 to 5 cm. The artisans’ tarts were then tasted and judged by a professional panel on several criteria: how well they were baked, the neatness of the slice, the texture of the pastry, and the harmony between the cream and pastry flavors.
So, who came out on top in the first edition of the 2026 Best Flan Contest in France? Good news for Île-de-France, as a candidate from the region climbed onto the podium. Rémy Duret, who runs his shop Maison Duret in Torcy in Seine-et-Marne, finished third in the competition. Congratulations to him!
Meanwhile, Elio Chaya, another Île-de-France contestant who had also won the 2025 regional best-flan contest, unfortunately failed to crack the podium.
The first prize for the best flan in France of 2026 goes to Clara Rodriguez from Dudot Bakery, in the Grand-Est region. She is followed by Thibault Rassemont, of Maison Rassemont, also based in the Grand-Est region.
