Every year, competitions are held to crown the best traditional baguettes in Île-de-France. It’s fair to say that the baguette, whether traditional or classic, is an institution in the country. A 2021 study commissioned by the Federation of Bakery Businesses estimates that 320 baguettes are sold in France every second!
The baguette's origins trace back to the long loaves of the 17th century, but its widespread adoption came in the 20th. And since 2022, the baguette de pain has even been listed on UNESCO's intangible heritage register. Yet today, two camps still clash: the lovers of the baguette classique and the others, the devotees of the baguette de tradition, which, as a reminder, is made only with salt, water, yeast or sourdough, and wheat flour.
Then, every spring, to crown the best French traditional baguettes in each department of Île-de-France, contests are organized by the Chambers of Trades and Crafts, to settle the matter once and for all. Bringing together a number of artisan bakers, these competitions give the jury the chance to feel, touch and taste these renowned traditional baguettes on offer, in order to name the best of the bunch.
