Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75, this Thursday, July 9, 2026. Placed in an artificial coma to "aid her recovery" on May 7 after emergency intestinal surgery at Faro Hospital in Portugal, the singer ultimately passed away that day, leaving behind the image of an artist instantly recognizable, powered by a raspy timbre that became her signature.
Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Wales, she has established herself as one of the great voices of British pop rock. Revealed by the hits Lost in France and It’s a Heartache, she managed to turn a distinctive vocal identity into a lasting artistic signature, before becoming an international star with Total Eclipse of the Heart.
Because while It’s a Heartache gave her an international breakthrough in the late 1970s, it was Total Eclipse of the Heart that became her biggest hit, propelled by the collaboration with Jim Steinman. The song, taken from the 1983 album Faster Than the Speed of Night, stood out as one of the most emblematic tracks of her career, followed by Holding Out for a Hero, which cemented her place in global popular culture.
Over the decades, Bonnie Tyler has kept her career going on stage and in the studio, most notably representing the United Kingdom in 2013 at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Believe in Me. More recently, she has continued releasing albums, including The Best Is Yet to Come in 2021, a testament to her enduring commitment to the music scene.
The public today mourns the loss of an instantly recognizable voice, linked to some of the greatest pop-rock choruses. A name evoking great vocal power, a distinctive live presence, and songs that have crossed generations without losing their impact.
