Pope Leo XIV in Paris: schedule, transport, traffic… everything you need to know before his arrival

Paris is bracing for the visit of Pope Leo XIV on September 25-26. Public events, a papamobile parade, a massive Mass, traffic snarls and disrupted transport: here’s what to expect ahead of his arrival.

The Pope Leo XIV is expected in France from September 25 to 28, 2026 for an apostolic journey that will take him to Paris, Lourdes and Metz. In the capital, the pope is set to visit the Élysée and UNESCO's headquarters, and to take part in several religious events open to the faithful... and to the public.

The Paris stay will unfold over two days, on Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26, 2026. Among the major events to note: a stop at Notre-Dame de Paris, a large youth vigil at the Stade de France, and, the next day, a solemn outdoor Mass on the Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Élysées. Not all gatherings will be freely accessible, and these large assemblies will inevitably be accompanied by traffic and transport restrictions in several sectors of the capital.

This visit by Leo XIV to France is all the more noteworthy as it follows the papacy of Francis, who had never before set foot in Paris as pope. His predecessor had already traveled to Marseille in 2023 and then to Corsica in 2024, notably not taking part in the December 2024 reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris.

He will therefore become the tenth pope to visit Paris. After two days in the capital, his journey will move on to Lourdes on 26 and 27 September, then to Metz on Monday, 28 September 2026.

The schedule for Pope Leo XIV's visit to Paris released to the public:

Friday, September 25, 2026

  • 16:00 to 17:00: papamobile tour through Paris, covering about 2.5 km from Notre-Dame-des-Champs church to Saint-Michel Square.
  • 17:30 : doors of the Stade de France open.
  • 18:30 : the prologue to the great youth vigil begins.
  • 19:30 to 22:30 : the grand vigil with the Pope at the Stade de France.
  • Late afternoon: a papamobile ride through the streets of Paris.

Saturday, September 26, 2026

  • 3 p.m. : a large outdoor Mass held between the Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Élysées.
