Directed by Kad Merad and co-written with Patrick Bosso and Judith El Zein, Marseille is a French comedy-drama released in 2016. Starring Kad Merad, Patrick Bosso, and Venantino Venantini, the film explores family ties and reconciliation with one's origins. It will be available on Disney+ on November 7, 2025.
After twenty-five years away, Paolo leaves his peaceful life in Canada to return to Marseille to be with his father, who has had an accident. Despite his intention to leave again quickly, he rediscovers the warmth of his family, the affection of the locals, and the energy of his hometown. This journey leads him to reconnect with his roots and confront a past he had fled.
The idea for Marseille was born from Kad Merad's desire to pay tribute to the city he loves. The script, inspired by the life of Patrick Bosso, is based on personal memories and real characters. Filming took place in the spring, a period chosen for its characteristic blue light. Kad Merad also directed the photography, paying particular attention to the natural settings, which were filmed in existing buildings in the city.
The film tackles themes of parentage, returning to one's roots, and family memory in an atmosphere that is both comical and melancholic. It will appeal to viewers who enjoy human stories and narratives rooted in everyday life.
