The Cannes Film Festival 2024 has just unveiled the official poster for its 77th edition, to be held from May 14 to 25, and it features Akira Kurosawa. Created by Hartland Villa from a still from Rhapsody in August, the Japanese master's penultimate film, the poster aims to "celebrate the 7th Art with wonder", according to the festival itself.
Released in 1991, Rhapsody in August was presented the same year Out of Competition at the 44th Cannes Film Festival. The story is that of a grandmother, a victim of the Nagasaki bombing on August 9, 1945, who passes on to her grandchildren and her American nephew her faith in love and integrity as a bulwark against war.
"Because it gives everyone a voice, cinema enables emancipation. Because it remembers wounds, it fights against oblivion. Because it bears witness to perils, it calls for union. Because it soothes trauma, it helps repair the living. In a fragile world that constantly questions otherness, the Cannes Film Festival reaffirms one conviction: cinema is a universal sanctuary for expression and sharing. A place where our humanity is written as much as our freedom," explains the Festival's press release.
