Directed by Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney for Illumination Studios, this animated film features the voices of Benedict Cumberbatch in the original version and Laurent Lafitte in the French version. Adapted from the book by Dr. Seuss, it will be available in France on Netflix from December 19, 2025.
In this story inspired by the 1957 classic, a lonely creature lives apart from a town where Christmas preparations are in full swing. Annoyed by the growing excitement of the inhabitants, he devises a plan to put an end to the festivities and regain the peace and quiet he needs.
The community he observes from his mountain is preparing for an even more joyful celebration than before. Faced with the scale of the event, his strategy becomes clear: to steal the decorations, gifts, and everything else that symbolizes the holiday.
The project was developed from the work of Theodor Seuss Geisel, already adapted in 1966 by Chuck Jones and in 2000 in a film directed by Ron Howard. Scott Mosier, who comes from independent cinema, joined Illumination after working on animated productions for Disney. Yarrow Cheney, initially the art director on Despicable Me, co-directed The Secret Life of Pets before joining the project. Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the character in a performance designed with an American accent. Danny Elfman composed the music, in collaboration with Tyler, The Creator, for a new version of "You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch."
The universe, punctuated by Illumination's visual codes, highlights the themes of withdrawal, traditions, and the search for social connection. The tone remains accessible to families and viewers attracted to stories set in a winter setting.
