Director Ramata-Toulaye Sy's debut film, Banel & Adama, has been selected for competition in the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival 2023. This promising drama tells the love story of two young people living in a remote village in northern Senegal.
Banel & Adama follows the eponymous characters, played by Khady Mane and Mamadou Diallo, as they experience a deep and sincere love. Unaware of the world outside their village, they are confronted with the conventions and restrictions imposed by their community. In this environment, passion and chaos have no place. The filmmaker tells this story of thwarted love in a small, drought-stricken village in Senegal. And while it's visually splendid (one thinks a lot of Terrence Malick while watching it), it's above all the staging of this love that impresses. Its purity is altered by the obligations of both, and the impossibility of this love's freedom is deeply moving.
What fascinates filmmaker Ramata-Toulaye Sy is the priesthood of her characters, who must choose between their love and the survival of their famine-stricken village. It's a lovely story that makes the director one of the cinema's personalities to keep a close eye on.
