French-Moroccan director Nabil Ayouch, author of the excellent Much Loved which was selected for the Directors' Fortnight in 2015, returns to the Croisette for the Cannes 2024 Festival with Everybody Loves Touda.
Touda dreams of becoming a Cheikha, a traditional Moroccan artist who sings without modesty or censorship, texts of resistance, love and emancipation that have been handed down for generations. Performing every evening in the bars of her small provincial town under the gaze of men, Touda nurtures the hope of a better future for herself and her son. Mistreated and humiliated, she decides to leave everything behind for the bright lights of Casablanca...
Moroccan actress Nisrin Erradi plays the lead role in the film, which is being screened in the Cannes Première selection. " It's the story of a woman, a singer, and how sometimes, in a certain cultural and political conception of Morocco, female singers were considered as something other than singers, and couldn't fully fulfill their vocation as artists," explained Thierry Frémaux at the traditional press conference on April 11.
