Corsica, 1994. Lesia is enjoying her first summer as a teenager. One day, a man bursts in and takes her by motorcycle to an isolated villa, where she finds her father undercover, surrounded by his men. A war breaks out in the underworld and the clan's grip tightens. Death strikes. And so begins a run in which father and daughter learn to look at each other, understand and love each other.
Such is the scenario of Julien Colonna's film Le Royaume, in the Un Certain Regard selection at the Cannes Festival 2024. This is the Corsican director's first film, and a contender for the Caméra d'Or award.
The film features an almost entirely Corsican cast, including Anthony Morganti, Andrea Cossu, Frédéric Poggi and Ghjuvanna Benedetti.
"This is a first French film, a film about learning. The story of a young girl who is going to learn about the rules, traditions and stories of the community she was born into and grew up in," declared Thierry Frémaux at the traditional festival press conference.
