Ten years after presenting Hope, his first fiction film at Critics' Week, which won the 2014 SACD prize, French director Boris Lojkine is back on the Croisette with his new film 'L'Histoire de Souleymane', selected in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes 2024 Festival.
The film recounts two days in the life of Souleymane, a Guinean bicycle delivery man who prepares for his asylum interview by telling a story that is not his own.
"Souleymane is a character who embodies all the people we see on the streets of Paris, Lyon and all over the world. These people on bicycles who deliver meals from the big chains to people who order them. We know how these orders arrive, but here, it's the point of departure that is filmed; these people on bikes are generally migrants who want to settle in France to try and get papers," explained Thierry Frémaux at the festival press conference.
He continues: "For the first fifteen minutes of the film, you wonder whether it's fiction or documentary, so much so that you get the impression that this story was meant to be told through film."
