Where and when can I see Bonjour l'asile in France?

Bonjour l'asile will hit cinema screens from February 26, 2025.

Synopsis: Jeanne leaves the stress of city life for a few days to visit her good friend Elisa, who has recently moved to the country. In the heart of the nearby woods, an abandoned château has become a third place, teeming with collective initiatives. Elisa would like to get involved, but between baby bottles and cloth diapers, she just doesn't have the time. Jeanne, an urban activist, doesn't see the point. As for Amaury, a luxury hotel developer, he wants to buy the château. In spite of themselves, all three converge on this place of mutual aid and subversion... But how long can this modern-day asylum hold out against the mad world?

With Bonjour l'asile, Judith Davis delivers a committed comedy, combining social satire and sharp humor to question our relationship with capitalism, common spaces and feminist struggles. Through the journeys of Jeanne (Judith Davis), an urban author-activist, andElisa (Claire Dumas), her friend in the countryside, the film confronts two worldviews while exploring the complexity of collective commitment. While the film's energy and sincerity are seductive, its sometimes caricatured approach and accumulation of stereotypes are likely to put many off.

From the very first scenes, the film sets its stakes: an old château threatened by a luxury hotel project, and a community trying to resist the intrusion of capitalism. Amaury (Maxence Tual), a charming but opportunistic real estate developer, embodies this external threat, while Jeanne and Élisa debate how best to act to preserve this collective space.

The fast-paced, chiselled dialogue is reminiscent of the best French political comedies, with comic scenes alternating with more reflective sequences. However, where the film could have stood out for its subtlety, it sometimes lapses into militant ponderousness, piling on eco-identitarian stereotypes and overly clear-cut oppositions: the mother overwhelmed by her mental load, the committed but idealistic city friend, the cynical promoter... A mechanism that, while effective, sometimes lacks nuance.

Judith Davis excels as Jeanne, delivering an energetic, convincing performance supported by incisive dialogue. Claire Dumas, as Élisa, brings a welcome emotional depth, although her character is sometimes reduced to a mere counterpoint to Jeanne's ideals. Maxence Tual, as a falsely sympathetic businessman, aptly embodies the capitalist opposition, although his role is too caricatured to generate any real debate.

In terms of form, Bonjour l'asile benefits from efficient, fluid staging. Wide shots highlight the rural setting and the château, underscoring the isolation of the place and the importance of the collective. Close-ups of the characters highlight their tensions and emotions, reinforcing the human dimension of the story.

Natural lighting and a warm, earthy color palette anchor the film in an authentic, accessible atmosphere. The dolly accompanies the characters' movements, creating a fluid, immersive dynamic. On the other hand, the discreet soundtrack sometimes lacks the impact to accentuate certain key scenes.

While the film tackles relevant, topical issues, such as the persistence of patriarchy, the mental burden on women and the gentrification of common spaces, it does so at times with a lack of finesse. Some of the activist monologue scenes, while powerful, seem tacked on to the plot rather than integrated naturally into the narrative.

Nonetheless, the film succeeds in offering an interesting reflection on living together and the way in which capitalism insidiously infiltrates every aspect of our lives. It raises essential questions about the viability of alternative models and the difficulty of reconciling commitment and everyday life.

Bonjour l'asile is a dynamic political comedy, driven by a committed cast and a critical look at contemporary society. While we appreciate its biting humor and hard-hitting dialogue, we regret the accumulation of stereotypes and a sometimes overly didactic approach, which risks tiring those looking for a more subtle satire. A work that is both relevant and frustrating, appealing to some for its militant energy, but annoying others for its lack of nuance.
