Sprite, 25, still lives with his mom, who’s ready to boot him out if he doesn’t finally get his act together. To land a job he needs a driver’s license; to pay for the license he needs a job. Trapped in this painfully concrete paradox, he searches for a way out in a suburb where getting around quickly becomes a daily headache.
He lands a job at a startup that cleans up apartments after parties. Now he has to reach these workplaces—often late at night—without a car. His driving instructor, Marie-Charlotte, drops an unexpected suggestion: use a dating app to find a place to sleep near his shifts. On paper, the plan quickly collides with Sprite’s awkwardness.
Martin Jauvat’s second feature after Grand Paris, Baise-en-ville expands his view of the Île-de-France youth, the hustle, and the limits on mobility. The film also reunites several performers already tied to his world, including William Lebghil, Anaïde Rozam and Sébastien Chassagne.
The comedy leans on a burlesque framing to tackle everyday, tangible issues: housing, work, transportation, obtaining a driver’s license, and autonomy. The film notably benefited from the Gan Foundation for Cinema’s 2024 Creation Prize.
