Following the traditional pre-Cannes press conference, some rightly noted that the official selection for Cannes 2026 was woefully lacking in American films, and that gap has now been filled with the announcement that James Gray's new film, Paper Tiger., will join the official competition. Starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller, the red carpet is shaping up to be among the most glamorous of the festival.
The American filmmaker is one of Cannes' most regular guests, having presented no fewer than six films in official competition: The Yards (2000), La Nuit Nous Appartient (2007), Two Lovers (2008), The Immigrant (2013), Armageddon Time (2022), and Paper Tiger (2026).
He also served on the official jury, chaired by Isabelle Huppert, at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. The announcement of the selection of Paper Tiger delighted cinephiles who will have the chance to see the film on the big screen at the Palais des Festivals, while awaiting the feature’s release, which has not yet been unveiled.
