One Sunday afternoon, we headed off to the Pays de Fontainebleau in Seine-et-Marne (77) to try out this horseback ride in the Fontainebleau forest. In Saint-Martin-en-Bière, just outside the village of Barbizon, we arrived at theEspace Équestre Henson - Pays de Fontainebleau. We were curious to discover these rustic horses from the Bay of the Somme, without really knowing what to expect.
As soon as we arrived, we noticed the relaxed atmosphere of the place. The welcome is friendly, without fuss, and you feel immediately at ease. Before climbing on, we take a quick look at the history of these Henson horses, which we're discovering for the first time. This very recent French breed - recognized only in 2003 - comes to us from the Baie de Somme, where it was created in the 1970s. The principle? Cross Norwegian Fjord horses with French saddle breeds to obtain a horse perfect for equestrian tourism. The result: magnificent horses with their sand-colored coats, two-tone manes and that famous black stripe down their backs that makes them so recognizable.
What struck us was their calm temperament. These horses seem to be used to beginners and don't panic over anything. Alice, our guide and teacher, explains that they live outside all year round, which gives them that stable character you feel when you come into contact with them.
For our first time, we opted for the 3-hour discovery tour. At 65 euros, we thought the price was right for the level of supervision offered. There are only a maximum of 6 of us in the group, which means we're well supervised. Note that the tour is accessible to children from 1.30 meters. We start by preparing our own mounts, which are allocated to us according to our temperament. This is a good way to get to know each other and to reduce your fear of these big beasts. Brushing, application of hoof care balm, a cuddle and we're ready for a 1h30 ride through the forest.
We enjoyed the ride in the Fontainebleau forest. These horses do well on all types of terrain, from sandy paths to rocky stretches. We let ourselves be carried along at a leisurely pace, with a few trots when the terrain is suitable and when the team feels like helping out. The pace remains leisurely, perfect for enjoying the scenery without stress. Of course, horses love to graze, so the game is to anticipate their movements so that they don't stop to eat.
What reassured us was the tranquillity of these horses. No deviation, no surprises. They know their course and you can feel it. Even those of us who had never ridden before felt confident. Ideal for a no-holds-barred nature outing.
The walk takes us through the varied landscapes of this 22,000-hectare forest. Between woods and clearings, we discover some nice spots. The Hensons seem to be in their element in this forest terrain, and their ease of adaptation is evident in their confident gait. We take a break in a beautiful clearing, and take a photo to immortalize the moment.
On the way back, we take a moment to help unsaddle our travelling companions. These gestures create a sympathetic contact with the animal. We leave with a good impression, happy to have discovered this more accessible approach to riding.
We offer different formulas to suit different tastes. For the more experienced, passion rides last a little longer with more paces. Day rides include a meal in the forest. There are also bivouac escape packages for those who want to take the experience further.
On the practical side, access from Paris is child's play. Train to Fontainebleau-Avon, then bus or, for those who prefer, direct drive. Theexact address: 2 chemin des Brulys, Saint-Martin-en-Bière. Easy to find and parking on site.
All in all, this equestrian activity in the Paris region convinced us by its accessibility. It's a good option for a nature outing this weekend in Seine-et-Marne, to be combined with other discoveries of the department. We had a great time, discovered a breed of horse we'd never seen before, and got a breath of fresh air in the forest. An experience we can recommend to anyone looking for a nature activity not too far from Paris.
This test was conducted as part of a professional invitation. If your experience differs from ours, please let us know.
