Metal fans are in mourning. heavy metal lovers are mourning. Phil Campbell, the legendary guitarist of Motörhead for more than 30 years, has passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the age of 64. His family confirmed the news in a post on social media.
“It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, Philip Anthony Campbell, who died peacefully last night after a long and courageous battle in intensive care following a major, complex operation,” read a post published on Saturday on the Instagram account of Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, the band founded by the guitarist with his sons.
« Phil was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud, loving grandfather, affectionately nicknamed “Bampi.” He was deeply loved by everyone who knew him, and his absence will be keenly felt. His legacy, his music, and the memories he created with so many people will remain forever etched in our hearts », one can still read in this poignant message.
As of now, the causes of his death remain unknown. But Phil Campbell et les Bastard Sons had announced last month the cancellation of their shows in Australia and Europe between March and May, following medical advice received by Phil Campbell, without providing any further details.
Born in Pontypridd in the south of Wales on May 7, 1961, Phil Campbell picked up the guitar at the age of 10. After forming the band Persian Risk in 1979, Phil Campbell joined Motörhead in 1983, the influential British heavy metal outfit founded in 1975 by bassist and frontman Lemmy Kilmister. Campbell would remain Motörhead’s guitarist until the group dissolved in 2015 following the death of its leader, Lemmy Kilmister.
The guitarist subsequently forms Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons with his sons Todd (guitar), Dane (drums) and Tyla (bass), and singer Joel Peters. After releasing two EPs in 2016 and 2017, Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons issues its first proper studio album, "The Age of Absurdity", in 2018. Later, the outfit will unveil three more records, including "Kings of the Asylum", the latest to date.
In 2019, Phil Campbell also released a solo album. Entitled "Old Lions Still Roar," the record features appearances by Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), and Benji Webbe (Skindred).
