After drawing in more than 300,000 spectators at the Théâtre Mogador in 2018, the French adaptation of the iconic Chicago returns to Paris from November 2025 to April 26, 2026 at the Casino de Paris. Don't miss its winter run in the capital, starring singer and dancer Shy'm as part of the cast, taking you on a smoky, jazz-infused journey into the Roaring Twenties with the legendary Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly.
Chicagoisset in the 1920s and tells the story of Roxie Hart, an artist who dreams of fame. After killing her lover, she ends up in prison where she meets Velma Kelly, a cabaret singer accused of murder. The two women, with the help of the cunning lawyer Billy Flynn, seek to manipulate the press and public opinion to escape their fate and achieve fame.
With six Tony Awards and numerous international awards, it is the most performed American musical in the history of Broadway and the West End since its premiere in 1996. It explores the themes of corruption, media manipulation, and the thirst for fame with humor, all in a jazzy style and energetic musical numbers, with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb.
Our Review
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome. You're about to witness a tale of murder, greed, corruption, violence, manipulation, infidelity, and betrayal—things that lie very close to our hearts." The tone is set right from the start! Accompanied by an extraordinary brass band that sometimes interacts with the characters, the action unfolds on a minimalist black-stage setup, instantly immersing the audience in the dark heart of Chicago’s worst: lies, treachery, and corruption.
Inspired by a true crime from the 1920s, the musical remains surprisingly relevant today, with a hint of feminism. It’s led by Shy'm, who delivers a sexy, sharp portrayal of Velma Kelly, and Vanessa Cailhol as Roxie Hart—self-centered yet touching. Both killers compete to capture media attention, willing to do anything to stay in the limelight, in a witty yet biting contest.
Even without having seen the American version, the French adaptation is thoughtfully done, with lyrics and witty dialogue maintaining their sharp edge, infused with dark humor and sometimes colorful language. It's modernized for today's audience, set against jazzy sounds and an irresistibly jazzy atmosphere that keeps the mood lively.
While Shy'm—an incredible dancer—and Vanessa Cailhol deliver a charismatic and glamorous duo with powerful voices that blend perfectly, other performers left a lasting impression. Waku Malanda commands the stage as Mama Morton, impressive in presence and vocal power; Pierre Samuel portrays Amos Hart, the battered yet endearing husband with a great sense of self-deprecating humor; and Jacques Preiss plays Billy Flynn, the charming yet unscrupulous lawyer.
Some moments of slow pacing and pauses occur during Roxie’s monologues, but the overall pace of the show is electrifying, with the quickly passing time fueled by sensual, precisely choreographed dances—blending ballroom and cabaret styles—performed by dancers in form-fitting outfits. The show bursts with energy, sexiness, and sophistication—resolutely cynical in tone.
While Chicago will undoubtedly appeal to musical lovers, jazz fans, and those seeking an uninhibited show, beware bringing very young children or sensitive audiences. The story’s provocative, dark themes and mature content should be appreciated with the right mindset.
