Marie-Antoinette, the last queen of France, continues to fascinate with her extraordinary destiny, marked by the opulence of Versailles and the turmoil of the Revolution. Malandain Ballet Biarritz 's Ballet Marie-Antoinette returns to theOpéra Royal du Château de Versailles from March 6 to 9 , 2025 . This choreographic work, created in 2019, retraces the journey of the last Queen of France, from her arrival at court on her marriage to her departure in October 1789.
Marie-Antoinette was first adored, then denounced as the kingdom's evil genius, and held responsible for all the country's ills before being carried off to the scaffold. Had it not been for her recklessness, her excesses and the scandals amplified by the pamphlets, would she have escaped this tragic fate? How did a queen loved by the people become a disgraced figure, precipitating the downfall of the monarchy in spite of herself? The last Queen of France deserved a ballet, and choreographer Thierry Malandain has created a tailor-made ballet for her, paying glowing tribute to Versailles and its Opéra Royal.
Thierry Malandain, director of Malandain Ballet Biarritz, is a specialist in neo-classical ballet. Known for his refined style, blending classical technique and modernity, he often revisits historical figures and works from the repertoire, such as the story of the last Queen of France, Marie-Antoinette, bringing them an expressive, contemporary dimension. His company is made up of some twenty exceptional dancers and is based in Biarritz .
