According to information reported by RMC Sport, the summer of 1998 and France's first World Cup victory are about to hit the stage. A project for a musical comedy dedicated to the Blues' crowning has been announced under the title 1998: our finest story. The show is planned for 2028, the year that will mark the 30th anniversary of the world title won against Brazil at the Stade de France.
Led by producer Farid Benlagha, already behind the stage adaptation of La Haine, this project should not merely recount the athletic journeys of Zinédine Zidane, Didier Deschamps, Lilian Thuram and their teammates. The ambition announced is to plunge the audience back into the atmosphere of the summer of 1998 by also following characters inspired by French society at the time. Football would thus serve as the backdrop to a broader narrative devoted to the collective emotions sparked by this Coupe du monde 1998.
The production must blend music, theater and video. According to the initial details released, the soundtrack would echo the big hits of the late 1990s, spanning French rap and electronic music, to capture the era’s cultural backdrop. Around twenty artists could be brought together on stage to bring this musical show.
The show's script has been entrusted to François Choquet, a prominent figure in French musical theatre who has worked on several major productions in the field. Talks are also underway with former players and staff from France's world champion team, though their involvement has not yet been confirmed.
The announced schedule includes a development phase over the coming years, with a launch eyed for late 2028 followed by a national tour in 2029. The project sits within the line of stage adaptations inspired by major moments in French popular culture and aims to revive one of the most defining episodes in the history of French sport.
