With this adaptation by Véronique Boutonnet, directed by Richard Arselin, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo takes on a new scenic dynamic. Three actors - Véronique Boutonnet, Franck Etenna, Luca Lomazzi and Stéphane Daurat - make Edmond Dantès' mythical tale of revenge their own, turning the narrative on its head.

Far from a linear reconstruction, this version plays with time and memory, deconstructing the plot in a syncopated, incisive rhythm. The spectator is plunged into a whirlwind of memories and emotions, where past and present mingle.
Unjustly condemned and imprisoned for fourteen years, Edmond Dantès returns as the Count of Monte Cristo, driven by a relentless thirst for justice. Through a staging that overturns time references, the adaptation highlights the mechanisms of vengeance, the transformation of the hero and the complexity of the feelings that drive him.

Our review of the show seen in 2015
So, at first glance, it's rather difficult to fully understand this crazy rhythm; more than an adaptation, this show is an invitation to (re)read the novel, to shed light on the whole and finally put the evoked passages in order. Richard Arselin's staging, however, is remarkable: making perfect use of the Essaïon theater's unique space, lighting the three actors with torches, and having them slide to the sides, as close as possible to the audience, his staging is an immersive experience of light and shadow, perfectly in tune with the novel's romanticism and gothic aspect.
All in all, the Comte de Monte-Cristo is courageous, modern and full of ideas!
