Nicolas de Staël, an atypical painter, is the focus of a new exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris. The retrospective runs from September 15, 2023 to January 21, 2024.

A French painter of Russian origin, Nicolas de Staël never ceases to amaze art specialists. Over the course of his fifteen-year career, the artist produced no fewer than 1,120 paintings in a wide variety of styles and influences. Abstraction, expressionism, impressionism, naturalism, fauvism, cubism, genre painting... The artist experimented with all the artistic trends of his time, demonstrating the constant evolution of his art and skills.

The Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris invites us to discover a major retrospective devoted to this atypical painter. This exhibition - the first of its kind in France in 20 years - brings together over 200 paintings, drawings, prints and notebooks. Nicolas de Staël reveals his true self in this rich, chronological tour.

We admire some of the artist's best-known works, as well as paintings rarely shown to the public. This retrospective is faithful to Nicolas de Staël's art, presenting numerous studies and research studies that illustrate the artist's creative process.

Nicolas de Staël was a travelling painter , attracted by the ever-changing scenes of the outside world. Seascapes, soccer matches, portraits, still lifes, popular festivals, nudes, landscapes: the artist drew his inspiration from his surroundings.

But what sets him apart above all is his use of color and light. Dark or very bright canvases, intense colors, accumulations of paint, variegated palettes... The artist experiments with all kinds of techniques and makes them his own. For him, it's a way of preserving his freedom.

Come and discover this major retrospective, which pays tribute to a unique 20th-century artist!
