This year, the Musée de la Légion d'honneur et des ordres de chevalerie celebrates the centenary of its creation with a free exhibition from June 25 to November 23, 2025, Wednesday to Sunday, 1pm to 6pm. It's an opportunity to discover its history through a selection of emblematic works and portraits of decorated men and women, representing the different stages and developments of the museum. Decorated men and women are at the heart of the exhibition, which presents their actions in the service of France.
The museum's history took shape in the aftermath of the First World War, when General Dubail, then Grand Chancellor, decided to create a shrine to the glory of the French and foreigners affected by the conflict. The aim: " To maintain, before the vestiges of a magnificent past, the cult of high virtues, with regard to which the cross of the Legion of Honor has been and will remain the reason that decides, the inspiration that leads, the reward that grows and consoles ".
It opened its doors in 1925 in a wing of the former Hôtel de Salm, the historic headquarters of the Grand Chancellery of the Legion of Honor. Its collections enable visitors to rediscover the great periods of French and world history through the careers of illustrious figures and lesser-known men and women, many of whom bequeathed their decorations and personal objects to the institution.
