The start of the school year is often synonymous with change and renewal: that's why a new venue is opening its doors in the heart of the capital this fall 2025. The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain is turning a new page in its history, leaving the 14th arrondissement for good to move to the Place du Palais-Royal in the center of Paris. To mark this new chapter, the Fondation is organizing a major retrospective exhibition. This exhibition looks back on 40 years of exhibitions and artists, 40 years of activity and history.
The General Exhibition is being held from October 25, 2025, to August 23, 2026. It offers an overview of more than 40 years of art and exhibitions. The exhibition brings together nearly 600 works by more than a hundred contemporary artists. Installations, sculptures, paintings, street art, photographs, artists from France, Latin America, Italy, Japan, Australia, the United States... This exhibition is very rich and varied, with something for everyone.
For regular visitors to the Fondation Cartier, this is an opportunity to revisit works that have left their mark on us over the last 40 years. For newcomers and lovers ofcontemporary art, it is a chance to discover a rich and unique collection, which houses monumental works and creations by renowned artists.
The Fondation Cartier is home to a wide variety of creations from all over the world, and from all fields of art and creation. Visual arts, architecture, fashion, music, technology, the living world... Each piece on display tells a little piece of the history and identity of this art foundation.
With this first exhibition at the Palais-Royal, the Fondation Cartier also wants to give itself a new impetus and embark on a new mission: it wants to become a place for sharing and experimentation, a lively artistic hub in the heart of Paris. The past is therefore on display in this journey, to better enable the Fondation to embark on this new life.
This exhibition is monumental. We discover very large works, which are everywhere around us, on every floor. We admire drawings and photographs, installations, audio creations, paintings, decorative art pieces... It's almost impossible to leave the Foundation without having seen at least one work, one ensemble that has fascinated and seduced us. The exhibition does not hide any grand, profound, or general message: we simply immerse ourselves in 40 years of creation and contemporary art, and enjoy this great artistic journey full of surprises.
