The"Excellences!"exhibition, on view at the Choiseul Library in Versailles from September 20 to December 20, 2025, highlights three centuries of French diplomacy. Designed in collaboration with the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, it reveals the history, behind-the-scenes aspects and cultural and political role of the diplomacy that has marked the history of France and its ambassadors.
This exhibition traces the great milestones of French diplomacy from the XVIᵉ century to the end of the XVIIIᵉ century, a period when alliances, negotiations and exchanges were essential levers of the kingdom's influence. Visitors discover the central role of theambassador, a key figure who not only represented a sovereign but also carried the image, values and power of France. The showcases highlight the tools of negotiation, modes of communication, the encryption systems used by ambassadors and secretaries-cryptographers, espionage at the time and the importance of the rituals that accompanied each mission.
Through a rich thematic and chronological tour - and especially rare items such as the Treaty of Münster, Marie-Antoinette's marriage contract and the Treaty of Utrecht - the exhibition also illustrates how diplomacy was part of the education of princes, and contributed to their intellectual and political formation. The decor of theHôtel des Affaires Étrangères serves as a guiding thread, with each room revealing a different facet of international relations and the territories evoked.
The exhibition at the Choiseul Library is more than just a succession of historical documents and objects. Visitors follow a path designed to alternate between thematic presentations and chronological narratives, fostering a fluid, lively understanding. Geographical focuses linked to the titles of the Gallery's rooms place diplomacy in its global dimension, recalling the extent to which France maintained a constant dialogue not only with Europe, but also with other strategic areas.
As you wander through the rooms, you'll be invited to experience the significance of these exchanges: the signing of a treaty, the presentation of a diplomatic gift, or the organization of ceremonies charged with symbolism. Theexhibition reveals how diplomacy was exercised as much through words as through gestures and decor.
This exhibition is aimed at those interested inpolitical history, international relations and the art of staging power. It will appeal to both history buffs and those curious to understand the subtle mechanisms that governed exchanges between powers. It's ideal for families wishing to introduce their children to the past, for students looking for a clear reference point, or for walkers in search of a cultural discovery in the heart of Versailles.
On the other hand, if you're looking for a light-hearted, purely recreational outing, with a focus on entertainment or digital interactivity, this proposal will not meet your expectations. Excellences! favors a documented approach to discovery, conducive to reflection and contemplation.
The exhibition invites the public to journey through three centuries of history in a unique heritage setting. The Choiseul Library, in partnership with the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, offers a rare encounter between written heritage, political history and architectural enhancement.
Each visit becomes an opportunity to explore the construction of French prestige, to understand the role of ambassadors and to place diplomacy in a global context, between political, cultural and symbolic stakes. A true immersion in the art of representing France beyond its borders.
