Laurie Simmons is a well-known American artist of her generation: questioning questions of identity, gender roles, consumer society and the blurred boundary between truth and lies, the photographer has established herself as a leading figure of the 1980s generation of artists.
From October 18 to December 20, 2025, she will be exhibiting some of her work at the Almine Rech Matignon gallery. The free"Black & White" exhibition features numerous photographs, as well as several sculptures. Laurie Simmons has selected several collections that take up and reinvent her very first artistic project, based around a doll's house. From her beginnings in the 1970s to her latest creations in 2025, Laurie Simmons offers us an interesting retrospective of her work.
This exhibition brings together some of her earliest creations. In particular, we discover a series of photographs taken in 1976: Laurie Simmons redecorated and photographed a doll's house, creating settings that represent the"dream of the 1950s housewife". Her artistic and critical eye invites us to question this ideal of another time, in an idyllic setting.
Just recently, in 2025, Laurie Simmons turned her attention to another kind of "ideal": playing withartificial intelligence, the artist reinvents her past works, thanks to new technologies. By exploiting AI bugs, she adds a little more unease to these utopian and false settings.
The exhibition also features a number of sculptures that once again offer a different perspective on this doll's house, which is becoming ever stranger.
What secrets lie behind the facade of this seemingly perfect house? To find out, come and visit Laurie Simmons'free exhibition at Almine Rech gallery.
