An old Parisian theatre turned museum, it's the latest hidden gem you shouldn't miss in the Opéra Garnier district. Starting May 4, 2026, a new museum will open its doors in the chic, cultural heart of the capital. A destination for fragrance enthusiasts, courtesy of Fragonard.
The famous perfume house is opening its third museum in Paris. The first is on Rue Scribe, just steps from the Palais Garnier. The second is a short walk away, at Square de l’Opéra–Louis Jouvet. This third address also stays in the Opera district of Paris. Head to Boulevard des Capucines, between Rue de la Paix and Rue Scribe, to discover the Théâtre du Parfum.
This unconventional museum has taken refuge in the former Capucines Theatre, a live-performance venue that stayed active until 1973. Among the big names to have graced its boards were Arletty and Gaby Morlay, who in particular shone on this stage.
The architecture of the venue has been restored and preserved: you can still see the ceiling mouldings, the red carpet, the heavy curtain and the stage from the old theater. But instead of costumes and theatrical props, there are now ancient objects that narrate the history of cosmetics and perfume, from ancient Egypt to today.
Fragonard draws you into a historical journey, unveiling ancient cosmetics and their uses. Nearly 300 pieces from both Eastern and Western civilizations come together in a chronological path. Apothecaries, the medicinal powers of plants, glove-makers turned perfumers, the fashion of fragrances under Louis XIV... Through the ages and across societies, perfumes have been assigned a range of roles and meanings.
In the grand gallery of the Théâtre du Parfum, Fragonard highlights Paris's role in the perfume industry. As the capital of fashion and luxury, the City of Light witnessed perfume emerge as a luxury commodity. A variety of objects recount this transformation: bottles, boxes and scented accessories, toilet requisites, gloves, handkerchiefs...
This fresh take on luxury is pushing fragrance houses to craft more refined, precious objects, alongside signature scents that form an olfactory identity. The fashion houses are also embracing this element, adding the final brushstroke to a silhouette’s identity.
People are eager to explore this new venue and its collections, which promise to pique the curiosity of luxury and fragrance enthusiasts.
