This is definitely not a happy time for lovers of museums in Paris and the Île-de-France region. After the Centre Pompidou, the Nissim de Camondo Museum, and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, it is now the turn of the French Playing Card Museum to close its doors for various works.
Located in Issy-les-Moulineaux, in the Hauts-de-Seine department, this museum is dedicated (as its name suggests) to playing cards. It houses more than 11,000 sets from around the world. Visitors can discover card games from India, China, and Japan, cards dating from the Ancien Régime to the present day, fantasy and artistic cards, and more.
From August 14, 2026, the museum plans to close its doors to the public for about a year and a half. During this period, the institution will take advantage of interior reorganization works to reconfigure and modernize the public reception areas and the spaces housing the permanent collections.
According to information released by the Hauts-de-Seine department, no exterior work, no major renovation, and no extensions are expected to affect the building. The planned works will focus solely on the museum’s interior and are slated to run from the summer of 2026 until early 2028.
We can’t wait to see what’s new at this museum and to learn about the upcoming exhibitions and programs planned for its reopening.
