Fancy taking a little trip back in time? The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris invites you to step into the 18th century and explore the grandeur of a French aristocratic private mansion. This immersive, one-of-a-kind exhibition is open from February 18 to July 5, 2026. Titled A Day in the 18th Century: Chronicle of a Private Mansion, it offers a captivating journey where art and history intertwine—an experience to savor at your own pace.
They can be seen in series or films—those grand bourgeois or aristocratic homes that captivate our imagination. Behind the dramas unfolding for the characters, you can glimpse lavishly decorated interiors, large portraits hanging on the walls, ornate rugs, and decorative trinkets... But all of that tends to take a backseat. The Museum of Decorative Arts, however, aims to spotlight this period setting by offering a more authentic, historically-inspired reconstruction reminiscent of Hollywood’s portrayal.
This exhibition takes us on a journey through a grand 18th-century private mansion, room by room. The detailed set designs depict a dining room, a game salon, a bedroom and a dressing room, as well as Madame’s boudoir... Visitors are guided through the daily life of its inhabitants: the itinerary mimics a typical aristocratic family's routine, from morning prayers to evening receptions, including leisure activities and mealtime customs...
The exhibition invites us to step into the shoes of a close confidant or a special guest: the family itself invites us to explore their private Parisian townhouse, a classic example from the 1780s. Throughout the visit, we notice traces of daily life, subtle marks that reveal the intimacy and everyday routines of the home's inhabitants. The focus is primarily on the lives of the homeowners, Madame and Monsieur. While the children and servants are mentioned, they are not the main focus of the exhibit.
Every reconstructed room is filled with tiny details that tell a story. The explanatory panels reveal the customs, manners, and everyday actions that defined the era. In this way, we rediscover a way of life that can sometimes seem surprising and distant from our modern world, yet not entirely foreign.
The MAD offers an authentic immersive experience set within an 18th-century aristocratic residence. Visitors can admire period furniture and decorative objects, of course. But it doesn’t stop there: to truly immerse visitors in the atmosphere, the exhibit is enhanced with sound and aromatic elements that breathe life into the historical decor. Every one of our senses is engaged during this journey back in time.
Our eyes can marvel at a collection of ceramics, clothing and fashion accessories, woodwork and wallpaper, toys, jewelry, furniture, and paintings that breathe life into this historic mansion reconstructed. In total, more than 550 period pieces are displayed here. Each room is filled with numerous intricate details, with decorative elements decorating every corner to bring this interior to life.
The Museum of Decorative Arts guides visitors through a fairly straightforward journey, illustrating the key moments of a typical day from that era. This exhibit is likely to attract many visitors, so it's best to be patient, wait in line, and be prepared to admire the many small objects in the display cases. To enjoy the exhibition more comfortably, it's recommended to visit during quieter periods.
This immersive exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs promises to be fascinating: in this reconstructed residence, the past comes to life, and these people, now gone, seem closer to us. We can't wait to discover this unique journey!
