Paris and Rome are undoubtedly among the most beautiful cities in the world: both tourists and locals capture every corner of these iconic destinations with their cameras. The Alinari archives house a vast collection of photos taken by both amateur and professional photographers since the 1840s.
On the gates of the City Hall, visitors can explore a free exhibition that showcases a curated selection of photographs. Titled Paris-Rome: Cities in Reflection through the Archives Alinari, this exhibit highlights the historical ties between Rome and Paris through 42 photographs taken from the 19th to the 20th century.
As visitors journey through the exhibit, the two cities gradually reveal themselves. They encounter monuments, iconic landscapes, archaeological excavations, and fashion photography... The exhibition also highlights key moments in history, such as the Paris Commune and the Storming of Rome. The visuals are presented in dialogue, creating a conversation between the two cities, as if Paris and Rome are responding to and complementing each other. Both share a deep, intertwined history and cultural heritage.
Alongside these iconic monuments and landscapes, the exhibition showcases numerous portraits and everyday scenes that celebrate the local residents. Terraces, markets, gardens, and parks—Rome and Paris aren’t just picture-perfect backdrops, but vibrant cities brimming with life, each offering a unique art of living.
The exhibition also pays tribute to the enduring bond between the two capitals by showcasing views of the French Academy in Rome, the Italian Cultural Institute in Paris, and the Villa Médicis. This free exhibit is part of the celebrations marking the anniversary of the Paris-Rome twinning.
