Not all artists wield brushes—some work with hedge trimmers, watering cans, and rakes. At Versailles Castle, the Grand Trianon offers a unique glimpse into the art behind the stunning gardens of the late 18th century, showcased through an innovative exhibition.
From May 5 to September 27, 2026, the pink marble castle will host the Jardins des Lumières Exhibition. Showcasing over 150 works from the late 18th century, this collection highlights meticulously designed landscape gardens. Visitors can marvel at paintings, sketches, architectural plans, period furniture, and even costumes, offering a rich glimpse into the artistic and horticultural aesthetics of the era.
Traditionally, the French formal garden is highly structured: symmetry is key, with broad straight lines and precisely planned geometric shapes... In contrast, and as part of the ongoing rivalry between the British and the French, a different style of garden started gaining popularity in Great Britain as early as the 1730s. On the other side of the Channel, the emphasis was on irregular spaces, winding paths, and a more wild, natural look... English gardens are composed of a series of small scenic landscapes and vantage points, encouraging visitors to continue their strolls in search of new perspectives just beyond the next bend.
Gradually, this more eccentric, poetic, and artistic British style is making its way into Northern Europe. Gardens are transforming, along with the outdoor habits and activities people engage in. Celebrations, outdoor games, gathering spots for conversation, and artistic pursuits—all of these behaviors are directly influenced by how the environment is designed and shaped.
The Grand Trianon exhibition also explores the diverse influences that shaped the garden design of the Enlightenment era, from ancient civilizations to distant China. The exhibit thoughtfully highlights the historic gardens of the Trianon estate, including its charming English garden, which is home to the Queen’s Hamlet, the Temple of Love, and the Belvedere.
With the arrival of sunny days, this exhibition presents a wonderful opportunity to deepen your knowledge of the history of the Versailles estate and to stroll through its famous gardens.
