Making images move, what incredible magic! The Toy Museum showcases a range of playful devices that predate cinema, in a family-friendly exhibition running from October 7, 2026 to July 4, 2027.

Travel back in time and discover toys that felt almost magical, captivating children for generations. Before the arrival of cinema, ingenious creators had already found ways to make pictures move... The Poissy Toy Museum presents Before Cinema: The Magic of Moving Images, a family-friendly exhibition to be seen from October 7, 2026 to July 4, 2027.

Kaleidoscopes, magic lanterns, shadow theatres, zoetropes, praxinoscopes, phenakistoscopes... some of these objects may be familiar to you. And others are still new to most people. So now’s the time to come and discover them with this exhibition.

The common thread among all these playful objects is that they create the illusion of movement, bringing still images and drawings to life. These early experiments predate cinema's official invention. Hidden behind child-friendly toys are fascinating technical processes that the exhibition explains to young visitors through a range of devices, games, and interactive demonstrations.

Around a hundred objects are showcased in this journey that blends the history of techniques, art, cinéma and games. It’s a chance to discover—or rediscover—toys and antique objects that have stood the test of time. Some are still tucked away in children’s toy chests today, while others could make a comeback thanks to this exhibition!

Enjoy this charming, family-friendly exhibition at the Poissy Toy Museum.
