Withineasy reach of the RER station in the commune of Poissy, nestles an astonishing house: the Villa Savoye. Built between 1928 and 1931 as a second home for the couple Eugénie and Pierre Savoye, the building is now one of eight architectural works by Le Corbusier in the Île-de-France region.
Nestled in a verdant park, the imposing building - delicately encircled by two rows of rosebushes - reveals its atypical architectural form at the turn of a tree. A concrete cube on stilts, the Villa Savoye- which resembles an immobile ocean liner - surprises with its bold geometry.
In keeping with the five principles of Le Corbusier's Mouvement Moderne, the house has been designed "as a veritable architectural promenade", in the words of the architect. Inside, gently sloping ramps, a spiral staircase, a free-form layout, a garden roof and wide openings to the outside form an interweaving of rectilinear lines stripped of all superfluous elements.
Occupied during the Second World War, the villa was subsequently abandoned before being purchased by the town of Poissy. Now a listed historic monument and World Heritage site, it continues to display its avant-garde modernity with aplomb in its verdant setting. You can now visit this treasure trove of Île-de-France heritage. A must-see for fans of architecture, but also for curious visitors eager for surprising discoveries.
