Did you know that nestled in the heart of the Latin Quarter is an overlooked masterpiece by the architect of the Arc de Triomphe? Serving as the headquarters for the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, the chapel on Rue Lhomond remains largely unknown to the public, yet it houses an extraordinary and remarkable interior.

Located at 30 Lhomond Street in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, the Chapel of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (also known as the Spiritans' Chapel) is a hidden gem from the 18th century often overlooked by passersby. While its façade blends quietly into the Pantheon neighborhood, its interior tells a broader story—one that extends beyond Paris itself, intertwined with distant missions and global outreach.

Founded in 1703 in Paris, the congregation initially trained priests to serve in impoverished parishes. Starting in 1816, its members were also dispatched on missions to the French colonies. The architecture of the main house of the institute was designed by Jean-François Chalgrin, the architect famous for projects such as the Arc de Triomphe and Saint-Sulpice Church. Built at the end of the 18th century, the chapel is a true gem.

The true distinctive feature of this chapel lies in its iconography. The Congregation of the Holy Spirit has a long-standing history of missions in Africa and Asia. This heritage is vividly reflected in the murals and ceiling decorations, which depict missionaries and scenes of evangelization across the seas. These are lavishly adorned with gold leaf and are brought to life by vibrant stained glass windows that catch the sunlight, creating a breathtaking interplay of light and color.

Additionally, it's best to visit on a sunny day, as during our visit, the gloomy weather cast a shadow over the nave, making it appear somewhat darker.

A chapel that nearly vanished during the French Revolution! Converted into a storage space for most of its history, it was saved by the congregation members who purchased the property in the early 19th century to establish their seminary there. Visitors can enter for free (located to the right after the entrance), but should remain quiet and respectful as the congregation continues to use the space.
