At the very start of June, cultural outings are all the rage in the Paris region! Barely has Nuit Blanche come to an end, and we’re already gearing up for another highlight on the calendar, aimed at history buffs and adventurers keen to explore the Paris region off the beaten track: the European Archaeology Days.
This year, the event runs from June 12 to 14, 2026, promising plenty of great deals and wonderful discoveries. In the Hauts-de-Seine, it’s also a chance to enjoy a free urbex-style exploration (but entirely legally), deep inside a still little-known network of underground medieval cellars: the Caves du Roi.
This unusual tour awaits beneath the streets of Sèvres, not far from Paris. One after another, you’ll discover different spaces that bear witness to the various activities that once took place here. First used to store wine destined for the court of Versailles, then as a brewery and a shelter during the Second World War, the Caves du Roi have had several lives—and still have plenty of secrets to reveal. The tour takes you from vaulted rooms to a winding maze, where you’ll find the remains of an icehouse, a spring and even a mysterious underground cathedral. The opening of reservations for the European Archaeology Days weekend will be announced on this page.
Please note that the route is quite long and includes stairs and uneven terrain, so be sure to wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and bring sturdy shoes. The visit is strongly discouraged for anyone with mobility issues.
