The Lights of Time 2026: Provins illuminated by candlelight for two evenings

The Lueurs du Temps lights up the medieval town of Provins (Seine-et-Marne) with thousands of candles, for two free evenings on July 4 and August 1, 2026, featuring fire performances and torch-lit strolls.

Over two evenings, July 4 and August 1, 2026, the medieval city of Provins, in Seine-et-Marne (77), swaps street lighting for thousands of candles. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed town is well known, and let’s be honest: at night, by candlelight, it reveals a face you wouldn’t guess in daylight. The cobbled streets, squares, and ramparts glow with a golden light, and it’s free to wander the Upper Town.

The event Les Lueurs du Temps is back for a new edition, delivering an atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else in Île-de-France. Jazz gigs on street corners, fire jugglers, torch-lit strolls, a nocturnal equestrian show, and storytelling in the subterranean passages: there’s plenty to fill an entire evening, whether you’re with a partner, with family, or with friends.

The entry to the town is free and open to everyone. You can stroll at your own pace, enjoy the big concert in Place du Châtel and the fire show on Place Saint-Quiriace without spending a cent. A few activities remain paid (tours, the equestrian show, storytelling), and that’s where booking really pays off, since seats are limited.

The Lueurs du Temps 2026 program in Provins

Good news for the regulars: this year the program has been refreshed, featuring new musical acts and fresh themes for storytelling and a dramatized guided tour. Here’s the full lineup for the two evenings.

  • Jazz-flavored musical ambience: in the streets and at Place du Châtel, with the Jill Street Band on July 4 and the Robin Caresse Combo on August 1. From 7 p.m. Free.

  • Fire-themed shows and juggling: the troupe « Les R'Mon Temps » lights up Saint-Quiriace square with performances at 9:00 p.m., 9:45 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. Each lasts 20 minutes. Free.

  • Illuminated César Tour: the 12th-century keep is adorned with over 700 candles, while the sound of a harp echoes in the guardroom for an intimate atmosphere.

  • Provins Rose Garden: start the evening in this enchanted garden offering stunning views of the town. Aperitif board and terrace tea room, shop and exhibition with free access. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Garden visit €7 (free for under 12).

  • Torchlight Guided Tour: a guided stroll to discover Provins between shadow and light, with torches for adults and lanterns for children (subject to weather). Departures at 9:30 p.m., 9:45 p.m., 10:00 p.m., 10:15 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., from Porte Saint-Jean. Duration 1h30. Flat rate: €12.

  • Equestrian Show “Crins de feu”: presented by the Equestrio company in the moats of the ramparts, at Porte Saint-Jean. Tricks, stunts and fire-hoofed horses on the program. Sessions at 9:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Duration 30 minutes. Price: €15 (adult), €11 (4–12 years), free for under 4. Online reservation at equestrio.fr.

  • Tales in the cellars “Legends and Beliefs”: dive into the medieval world with witches, fairies, ogres and dragons, following a mysterious guide—the “wolf handler.” Departures at 6:00 p.m., 7:15 p.m., 8:30 p.m., 9:45 p.m. and 11 p.m. Duration 45 minutes. €16 (€14 from 5 tickets). Suitable for ages 8 and up.

  • Theatrical tour “Between Dog and Wolf”: a playful, interactive format where children and adults search for a mysterious wolf hidden among them, uncovering the ramparts lit after dark. Departures at 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., Allée des Remparts, opposite Tour des Engins. Duration 1h30. Price €16 (€14 from 5 tickets). From 6 years old.

How much is admission, and how do you reserve?

Access to the illuminated city is completely free, as are the jazz concerts and the fire-juggling show. Only guided tours, the equestrian performance, and the storytelling require a ticket. It’s highly recommended to reserve in advance on the official Provins Tourism site, since seats are limited and these acts tend to sell out fast. Tickets are also available on site at the Tourism Office.

Getting there: Provins is easily reachable from Paris — about 90 minutes by train from Gare de l'Est (Transilien P line), followed by a short stroll to the Upper Town. Note: pets are not allowed inside the monuments or at the performance venues.

Our take on who these evenings are for

Our unequivocal favorite is the torch-lit stroll through lanes emptied of artificial light: hard to imagine a more otherworldly escape within just a couple of hours from Paris. The Tour César, bathed in 700 candles and with a harp in the background, offers a suspended moment you won’t forget.

These evenings are pitched to couples seeking a romantic interlude by the rose garden, as well as families charmed by storytelling and the horse show. One small tip: wear sturdy shoes for the cobblestones and bring a light sweater, because summer nights can stay chilly once the sun goes down.

If Provins has won you over, extend your discovery with Les Médiévales de Provins 2026, the city’s grand historical festival, and with the show La Légende des Chevaliers, to be enjoyed throughout the season beside the ramparts.
