A new coffee shop featuring Hong Kong specialties? Head for Bing Sutt, the new spot a stone's throw from the Place de la République, offering a charming setting to relax during the day, savouring a good Chinese tea with some fine local pastries.
Located on rue Béranger in the 3rd arrondissement, this coffee shop boasts a refined, welcoming atmosphere. A designer counter, wooden seats, a suspended air brewer and white walls form the decor of a place open to all. At the helm is Davinna, a Parisian influencer who wanted to offer a meeting place for the Hong Kong community, but also to showcase the dishes of her childhood.
Indeed, she reminds us that Hong Kong is a Chinese city born of a melting pot of cultures with varied influences. She insists that this is not a Chinese coffee shop, but a Hong Kong one. It's like saying 'European restaurant' instead of talking about the different countries of Europe," she says.
So, as you'll have gathered, Hong Kong's specialties are a blend of cultures, from the Portuguese-influenced Egg Tart, reminiscent of pastéïs de nata, to Custard tarts and milk tea, whose origins obviously lie with the British.
In addition to the must-try Hong Kong Milk Tea, which is part of Hong Kong's intangible cultural heritage, you'll enjoy honey chrysanthemum tea and lemon tea. The coffee, meanwhile, is subject to change according to the house's latest discoveries.
Among the must-try dishes is the Pinneapple Bun, which can be eaten plain, with butter or in a cheese version for the adventurous. Moist to perfection, we love it! Ovaltine and almond cakes and cookies are also on the menu. For lunch, the house offers a savory version of the famous bun, or a hot dish that changes every month. This month, it's Borscht soup macaroni, a Russian-influenced specialty.
In this Chinese New Year period, the coffee shop offers a typical dessert based on glutinous rice pearls topped with coconut and peanuts in an infusion of ginger syrup. You'll love this sweet version, which features little rabbits to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Water Rabbit.
Like any self-respecting coffee shop, the place is equipped with wifi and awaits you with good teas and coffees to enjoy from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and from 9.30am to 6pm on Saturdays. Let's go for a coffee and sweet break?
