Madeleine fans beware: the brand-new Comptoir de la Madeleine opens its doors in the 9th arrondissement of Paris.

Is the Madeleine in your house like the Madeleine in Proust's? Then it's time to discover Le Comptoir de la Madeleine, the new gourmet address at 17 rue Victor Massé in Paris's 9th arrondissement. Created by Quentin Hua, this boutique-atelier gives pride of place to the travel cake that takes us all back to childhood.

Quentin's madeleine is both soft and crunchy around the edges, a true madeleine as we like it, reminiscent of the ones we used to find in Parisian bistros.

After years spent in finance, Quentin Hua decided at the age of 30 to embark on another adventure close to his heart: the creation of madeleines. From an early age, Quentin has always appreciated the taste of madeleines, which he has tasted in large numbers all over France. It was during a special tasting in a bistro in the South of France that he fell in love with Madeleine. He decided to try and reproduce this sensation by creating his own recipe. After more than 200 attempts, inspirations and personal variations, Quentin was finally able to perfect a recipe that offered him the true emotion of Proust's Madeleine.

Quentin Hua's Comptoir de Madeleine is a boutique-workshop designed to seduce passers-by on the street. Inspired by Anglo-Saxon street food kiosks, the spot is open-fronted and draws our attention to make us salivate. Once inside, we can admire the workshop where everything is made on site, and smell the delicious aroma of warm cookies baking all day long.

It's the perfect place for a comforting treat on the go, or a magical after-school snack. As you'd expect, it comes in a variety of flavors:

  • Vanilla
  • Lemon
  • Chocolate-praline filling
  • Salted butter caramel

As an added bonus, the store is offering a temporary madeleine of the moment, which will change with the seasons. Matcha, pistachio and 4-spice are just some of the discoveries on the program. Count €1.90 per madeleine, €7.20 per box of 4, €10.20 per box of 6, €18.20 per box of 8, €36 per box of 24 and €49 per box of 35. Comptoir de la Madeleine is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11.30am to 7pm.

A good madeleine, friends?
