WHSmith, this famous British bookstore set rue de Rivoli reopens its atypical tearoom and partners with Twinings, London tea house. Located on the 1st floor of the centenarian establishment, the tearoom wants to give shelter to British expat’ who run there to buy books and rebound with WHSmith’s past. Indeed, when WHSmith opened in 1987, many celebrities and intellectuals (Marlène Dietrich, Jane Birkin, Isabelle Adjani, Woody Allen, Claude Sarraute, Louis Ferdinand, Céline…) came to enjoy a cuppa far from Paris hustle and bustle.
After closing for 30 years, WHSmith bookstore reopens its tearoom in Paris in the historic atmosphere of George Washington’s flat and wished to join forces with Twinings, the official tea supplier of the British Crown since 1837, which has an aromatic collection of over 30,000 teas selected by tea testers. If we feel like we know Twinings tea, including the famous Earl Grey, at WHSmith, tea lovers will be happy with a developed list including 55 exceptional teas not sold in stores.
On the menu, blends created by ten Twinings tea testers for €7 and 40 exceptional teas for €9 including the Imperial Pu’erh (black tea from the Yunnan province in China), Darj Okayti, rich white tea from Okayti garden in Darjeeling, 2nd flush Assam Mangalam Garden, Keemum Mao Feng (black tea flavored with a hint of flower aroma), Jin Zhan Mo Li (infused black tea that opens like a sea anemone), 1st Flush Darjeeling Chamong Est 2014 (tea of the year, emerald color). By the way, please note that teas are also available on sale, have a look at WHSmith delicatessen shop.
To accompany your teas, WHSmith partnered with pastries and cooks to offer an all-things British (and American) menu for breakfast, lunch and teatime (or afternoon tea). On the menu, a ham toast for €12, Scottish porridge for €5, pork pie for €13, key lime for €9, delicious rose and raspberry cupcakes for €8 and even a shortbread for €6… And for afternoon tea enthusiasts, a savory and sweet tray is to be enjoyed with a cup of tea for €27.
We love the three cozy areas of the place, the armchairs and other relaxing corners that only scream for us to seat. Ideally seated facing the Tuileries, this hidden place is the place to be for a British teatime after taking a long walk.
