Chez Pépé Merle is a family story. After the war, in 1946, Claire Berni’s great grand-father, Marcel Merle, buys the factory set 131 rue du Chemin Vert in Paris 11th arrondissement. Turned into a boilermaking factory, the building housed until 1986 many refrigerators, hot water tanks, ski resort gondola lifts… before shutting down, as it became too polluting and noisy for a Paris in full transformation.
The following generation changes it into a small garage and parking lot, until 2006, from which you can still see remnants on the ground floor, vestige of this industrial era. Now, when you walk by the building, you cannot even imagine the story of the building house to a genuine gem, the Chez Pépé Merle bed and breakfast, in tribute to the different generations that lived there. The building still owned to Claire Berni’s family, she decides – inspired by the Anglo-Saxon concept – to turn it into a guest house, one of the only ones in Paris. As a matter of fact, the label is more common in the country side, while hotels open here and there all over town.
Far from the hotel vibe, the entrepreneur has managed to give a genuine Parisian spirit to all her bedrooms inspired by her sense for decoration and passions. Starting from €139 per night you can stay as a couple, with your family or friends in themed bedrooms inspired by the different Parisian areas, including a local and delicious breakfast and custom services provided all along your Parisian stay. Are you more into Grand Palais, Oberkampf, Ménilmontant or Saint-Michel?
In the Grand Palais bedroom enjoying a private bathroom, the atmosphere is inspired by fashion and luxury for a comfortable and elegant night.
The Oberkampf bedroom is inspired by the eponymous baron, who invented the weaving machine and the Jouy-print style with baroque and colorful prints.
Ménilmontant is a popular area inspired by villages, and this is what it feels like in this bedroom that seems to come from another time. It can open into a family suite with the Saint-Michel bedroom, with a more child-inspired look with comics and the famous local bookstore, likely to delight children.
Have you fallen in love with one of the bedrooms or one of the furniture pieces coming straight out of a history book? You can buy it thanks to the partnership of the bed and breakfast with a second-hand goods dealer. Are you fond of fashion or jazz? Your host offers you the possibility to create you a custom-made tour of Paris to enjoy your passion. No matter how long or why you stay, for your wedding night, or to visit museums, Claire Berni provides her service to plan it all so you have nothing to be worried about.
With a host inviting you like at home, no doubt you will be genuine Parisians when you leave!
