For the 42nd edition of the Journées du Patrimoine, we headed for theLithuanian Embassy, which opened its doors to us on Saturday, September 20, 2025. It's an opportunity for us to discover the sumptuous mansion near the Parc Monceau, and to immerse ourselves in Lithuanian culture, which is little-known in France.
In the 19th century, this private mansion at 22 boulevard de Courcelles was the first Parisian residence of composer Ernest Chausson, his wife and their three children. During this period, the hotel was decorated by painters Maurice Denis and Odilon Redon. His study also featured a large portrait of the Chausson family, painted by his friend Eugène Carrière. The building became an embassy in 1999.
Please note that the Lithuanian Embassy is only open on Saturday, September 20. Don't miss this unique day, and make a note of the date in your diary! Please note that this visit is by registration only, and that you have until September 18 to reserve your place.
To mark the 150th birthday of one of Lithuania's greatest artists, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, the Lithuanian Embassy in France invites you, on Saturday September 20, to plunge into his creative universe and explore the luminous, infinite trajectories revealed in his vision of the world.
Housed in the former residence of French Romantic composer Ernest Chausson, just a stone's throw from Parc Monceau, the Lithuanian Embassy in Paris invites you to discover Čiurlionis and his times, and look for links with our present and future. Embark on a journey of self-discovery and world knowledge, where safe homes and a universe rich in finds come together in a grand unity.
Čiurlionis, often compared to Gustave Moreau for his symbolist approach and ability to fuse music and painting, will transport you to a world where art transcends boundaries. Like Moreau, Čiurlionis has created works that invite contemplation and reflection, offering an immersive and deeply personal experience.
A visit to the Lithuanian Embassy in France will allow you to explore the work of this exceptional artist. Starting your journey as observers, you'll become active co-creators and guardians of his legacy.

### Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis
Born in 1875, the eldest of nine children of a church organist, Čiurlionis showed remarkable musical talent from an early age. A child prodigy, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis had mastered the piano by the age of five and the organ by six. He became Lithuania's first modern composer and an innovative painter, creating 400 musical works and 300 paintings in his short 35-year life. Čiurlionis invented new forms, such as pictorial sonatas, which fuse painting and music. The artist's legacy lives on in hundreds of musical compositions and works of art inspired by mythology, the cosmos and nature.
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis remains one of Europe's most extraordinary and little-known artists. A pioneer of the harmonious fusion of music and the visual arts, his work anticipated abstraction, poetic surrealism and metaphysical painting. Despite his genius, historical circumstances have kept his legacy in the shadows, until today.
Čiurlionis's vision, deeply rooted in philosophy, cosmology and nature, is more relevant than ever. His influence on modern art is finally being recognized, inspiring new generations of artists, composers and thinkers around the world.
### The Lithuanian Embassy in Paris
The Lithuanian Embassy is housed in a private mansion that in the 19th century was the home of the French Romantic composer Ernest Chausson (1855-1899). Over the years, the Chausson family mansion had acquired the reputation of a veritable Parisian cultural salon. It was frequented by composers Henri Duparc, Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy and Isaac Albéniz, poet Mallarmé, painters Claude Monnet and Maurice Denis and many other famous artists of the time. The residence of the man who was also secretary of the Société Nationale de Musique is evoked by Stéphane Mallarmé in one of his "Loisirs de la Poste": "Arrête-toi, porteur, au son / Gémi par les violoncelles, / C'est chez Monsieur Ernest Chausson, / 22 Boulevard de Courcelles".
The main role of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in France is to strengthen Franco-Lithuanian relations in the political, economic, commercial, military, scientific and cultural fields, and to contribute to Lithuania's influence in France.
Since August 14, 2024, the Ambassador of Lithuania to France has been His Excellency Mr. Arnoldas Pranckevičius.
